Wine Openers

Wine openers are a matter of preference, and generally, your preference is decided by convenience – how easy it is to open a bottle, and maybe price. Which opener is easiest for you to use? The following are four styles that are time-proven to work and work well, once you get the technique down. Having said that, opening a bottle of wine can take some muscle. Some openers require less muscle than others, and of course, “muscle” won’t matter to some of you.

There are numerous other efficient wine openers that I will leave for another time, but don’t miss the electric wine opener video at the bottom of this article from Consumer Reports. I have not yet tried an electric, but I’m thinking I will real soon.

Starting with the easiest:

The Lever-style, also known as The Rabbit or the The Rabbit-style: Most women can use this corkscrew, and men like it to. It looks grand, although I’ve seen some comments saying it takes up too much drawer space. Mine has a copper look and I keep it on a baker’s rack in my breakfast room with wine glasses. It’s a nice little piece of art. Watch the video below to see how easy it is to use the lever-style corkscrew.

Waiter’s Corkscrew or Waiters Wine Key: This is the wine opener used in restaurants, and was the one most of us cut our teeth on. It’s the one many people dread being faced with, especially when friends are watching. Take a look at the video below to see how easy it is, but note that your waiter holds the bottle in one hand as he performs the same movements you see in the video (which are maneuvered while sitting down, with the bottle on the table). It is totally acceptable to stand the bottle on the table…unless you are opening a bottle for a customer tableside.
