My name is Maggie Thornton. I worked in the wine and spirit industry for many years in retail, brokerage, owned a wholesale house and a wine and spirits accessory store. I represented many brands, labels, wineries and distilleries. I’ve been out of the business for a few years, but have never lost interest.
I have traveled to many of the world’s wine districts (but not nearly all of them).
In general, I like to talk about wine and spirits, about grapes and where they are grown, about the difference between grape names and grape places, about sweet and dry, about serving and sharing, about glassware and wine and spirit tools, about enjoying and finding new finds, and when possible doing it all on a reasonable budget. Now that I have more time, food has become a passion as well.
I love to entertain. Table settings are a hobby. You’ll probably see some of that here, especially as my herbs begin showing up. You’ll see photos of simple foods hubby and I enjoy every day and the wines we like with them…or maybe a new gin. Gin and tonic and a great burger is a match for me.
I have a lot of beautiful glassware. Some are works of art more than a good vessel for wine and they have a special place on in my home but you won’t find wine in them. Others are so lovely to hold, you don’t want the wine or spirits or liqueurs to end.
I adore cheese. A day doesn’t go by without cheese in my life, and my arteries are just fine.
I don’t cellar nearly as much as I once did, but am good about ferreting around in dusty bins, especially when I travel, and taking the good advice of those still in the business. I’ll try to strike a balance between expensive, inexpensive and in-between but even when I was still in the industry, I found true wine lovers liked to know about wine they normally could not afford. Knowing what makes great wine great gives perspective on why you should be picky about a $10 or $15 bottle of wine, because they are not all the same.
Don’t forget to look through the menus under my header. You’ll find general information there that may answer some questions or be interesting, and know they are a work in progress (beer, for one). Feel free to leave your comments anywhere on the site.
